Got a smartphone or a small-screen tablet? check out the Uploader for Garmin!

Forerunner 405, 405CX, 410 going beta!

It took me quite a while, but we're finally here. The first batch of ANT+ Garmin devices to be supported in Sportablet is the 405 / 405CX / 410 family. Version 2.9 includes beta-level support for this family. The Uploader for Garmin, version 2.1, is also bringing ANT+ support to small tablets and smartphones.

To use ANT+, you have to install a couple of services on your tablet. My previous post explains the entire procedure in full details. Please take the time to go through it.

Support is still in beta, which means:
- There is no graceful error handling if you do not install the required ANT+ services (again, see my previous post).
- There seems to be timeout issues inside the Dynastream service. There are a few knobs you can turn inside "options". Again see my previous post for full details.

The beta is fully functional and safe to use. No data is ever written to the forerunner, so it's always risk-free. If the app ever hangs for any reason, the watch may stay in the "upload" mode for a dozen seconds or so, but will revert to standby or time mode in a short while.

Please send me a log if you try out the beta. I really need to check what is going on with different Garmin models and tablets / phones. The ANT+ log is very detailed and can get a little too long for some email apps, so:

- try the app with device diagnostics off, just to check that it works.

- if the app works, enable device diagnostics (under "my options"), turn on the watch again, and enable everything on your watch as you did before. The app will see that there are no new activities and will stop earlier. Send me that log with the red button, thanks :-).

- if the app does not work for your device / tablet, enable device diagnostics, set up your watch as described in my previous post, try to upload. The app will retry for a long while, so at some point you may want to stop it and send me the log.

Any plans to support the 910XT? Can I help in any way?

Thanks, great work.

Hi Luis,
sure, support for the 310/610/910 family is coming. Right now I'm working on these apps in my spare time, so I expect to have something ready for the end of February.

You can already check if your tablet / phone is going to work. Just follow all the steps in this post:

http://www.sportablet.com/1/post/2012/11/get-ready-for-ant.html

the 910 should get to the point of pairing. After that, the protocols differ, and download won't succeed, but if you get to that point, it's going to work in the end. If anything goes wrong, send me a log :-)

This is fantastic, thanks Carlo! I switched to a 610 late last year. Delighted to hear there is a chance of Sportablet support before my next out of town event :-).

I tried the steps in the get ready for ANT+ post on my TF300 and everything looks good up to data transfer. If I can help out some way let me know.

Hi Glenn,
the 610 protocol should be identical to the 910, but if you can send me a log, I'm sure it won't hurt :-)

Hi Steph,
generally speaking, if you get that message it is worth checking that garmin connect is actually working (they tend to to updates during the weekend).
If you keep having problems, please get in touch through the contact form, I may have to ask you a few questions. First thing I need to know is when exactly you get the error (trying to login, after login while sending the file, after the file is sent / while unlocking, etc)

Thanks for your answer, I've tried to send my activity the last weekend and I got the error while sending the file. I'll try next time and if I have the same problem I'll send you a post.
Thanks for your job

Hi I am a bit sceptic to try and battle with an app I don't know. Can anyone help me confirm that this app will work on the Samsung S4 smartphone?
Does all the features work the same as on a normal PC? I must add that I am currently using the Garmin forerunner 410. Any info will be appreciated.

Cheers

an update on the S4 is here:
www.sportablet.com/1/post/2013/11/samsung-s4-and-ant-garmin-devices.html

the app can use the internal ANT+ chip when you have android 4.3, so you don't need your ant+ key anymore.

However, the app requires some good will. You often have to try a few different settings etc as indicated above. If that sounds like too much work, it's better to stay with your PC.

Thank you very much, I'll have a look, and if I discovered something new I'll put a new notification on this site. Maybe there is someone else that battles with the same thing, that could then benefit from this journey.
