Got a smartphone or a small-screen tablet? check out the Uploader for Garmin!

Garmin Uploader app for mobile phones (beta)

In the past few months, I've got a few requests for an uploader app targeting mobile phones instead of tablets.
Actually, in the beginning I choose to target tablets both because of screen resolution and because Android 3.1 was needed anyway, which was rare on phones at the time.
There are now enough phones with Android 4.x that it makes sense to port at least some of the Sportablet features on a mobile. Also, there are small-screen tablets which don't really work so well with Sportablet, but will work fine with the Uploader.

The Uploader is currently in beta, so the user interface is totally crude and it's mostly meant to test compatibility between phones and garmin devices, just as Sportablet needed. So if you download this app, please send me the log, and add a few details on your phone / garmin device. At this stage, I expect these devices to work:
Forerunner 305 and 205
Forerunner 110 and 210
Forerunner 301
Edge 305 and 205
Edge 500 and 800

but as usual, there might be hiccups on some mobile phones.

The app is available for free: get it from google play, and remember, send me the log :-). Make sure you get version 1.2 or above, previous versions required an activation code.

What would be cool:

* Support for 7inch tablets. (Nexus 7)
* Direct upload to runkeeper (like fit2app)

The Nexus 7 has a 1280x800 screen, so the flagship :-) Sportablet app is the best fit, not the Uploader, which targets small devices. It's just a matter of testing USB compatibility.

About runkeeper: I see no obstacles. At this time, I've got many requests for Strava, so it is going to come first. You're the first to ask for runkepper (someone has to be :-) but I'll surely keep this in mind!

Hi
I have Sony Xperia Acro S with internal ANT+ chip. I can't make it connect to my edge 500.

I have force scan turned on. It just stays spinning for ever with the text "receiving data, ANT Interface claimed" but nothing happens.

Hi Tony,
the edge 500 has limited ANT+ capabilities; it can connect to ANT+ accessories like chest belts etc, and send some data to another edge, but to access the activity log, a usb cable is needed (just like when you connect the edge to your pc).

You need a USB OTG cable to connect it with the Xperia (you need to enable mass storage mode for that to work as the edge 500 is a flash drive). Try that, if you experience any problem send me a log.

Here is another request for runkeeper :)

duly noted :-). It's a bit of a mess because runkeeper does not accept standard formats, they have their own proprietary data format, much less expressive than either TCX or FIT. It's going to take time...

Finally have an Android device which will successfully communicate with my Forerunner but one thing stopping me buying this app: I typically upload to multiple sites so would like a way to set some of the simple metadata like title and description before doing so to save setting it in multiple places subsequently. Today I do that on the desktop with SportTracks and plugins.

for various reasons that feature is not around the corner, so if it's so important for you, just don't buy the app and keep using your pc : )

Thanks Carlo. I may yet cave in and buy all the same (particularly if SportTablet were to ever accommodate a 7 inch screen). Keep up the good work!
