Got a smartphone or a small-screen tablet? check out the Uploader for Garmin!

Sharing on Runtastic

The Uploader for Garmin version 5.1 and Sportablet 6.0 can share your activities on Runtastic (for some Garmin devices).

A few notes:

- like sharing on Endomondo, this feature will be in permanent beta. Runtastic does not officially allow third party apps like mine to upload. Therefore, I need to go through some alchemy to make it works. If they change something on their side, my app will break.
If it happens, tell me. Be nice, thanks. If you can't be nice, don't use my app.

- Runtastic does not accept FIT files, and FIT is the native format for many Garmin devices. I'm working on a high-fidelity FIT-TCX converter, but meanwhile, you can already use the app on several Garmin models not based on FIT (like the good old FR305, or the FR405, the TCX-based edge models like the 705, the GPX-based models like the Dakota 20, etc.). If you Garmin uses FIT internally, you'll get an error message at this time.

Once again: the right thing to do is to have patience, understand that I'm working on this stuff in my spare time, help the app to grow by spreading the word, perhaps add a +1 in a comment here to let me know that you need it.
The loser thing to do is to go to Google Play and complain. So don't :-).

I'm not a Runtastic user, so I would appreciate if you guys could tell other people in the community that now they can upload from their Garmin to Runtastic using their phone / tablet, no PC involved anymore.

Export to runtastic gets a failed download message after it logs in and attempts to send for one of my workouts. Three other ones work without a problem. Not sure why that one always fails.

If the activity is already on runtastic, upload will fail and runtastic will simply give back a generic "server error", so when that happens, I can't provide a more specific error message. So the first thing to do is to check that you didn't already upload that file.

The second step is to save the activity to sd card, try to upload interactively on runtastic.com, and see what happens.

You can also send me the tcx file, so that I can do some testing.

I just wanted to reach out and express my extreme gratitude for your work in enhancing others running experience. I was about to purchase an older FR 405 and found your app. This is so amazing. I cant wait to use your app and slap 5 stars in google play. Thank you so much. I hope i can get it to work with my LG G2 smartphone as well as Runtastic (happens to be the run app i was using already).

The G2 should be ok, according to the specs it supports usb host mode, which is necessary to plug in the garmin usb ANT+ dongle.
Remember: you need an OTG cable for that to work.
I don't have any reports from a G2, so when you give it a try, consider sending me a log, it may help other guys as well.
Instructions for the 405 are here: http://www.sportablet.com/1/post/2012/11/get-ready-for-ant.html

I converted the fit file to tcx and uploaded to runtastic.com via browser. heart rate data is missing on runtastic.com. How ever the summary in the app shows heart rate data in the fit file format.

I assume you mean GPX and not TCX, because the app at this time does not support fit->tcx conversion (otherwise I would use that to send data to runtastic).
When exporting to GPX, only time and gps cordinates are transferred: http://www.sportablet.com/1/post/2013/06/exporting-activities-as-gpx.html
this is by design.

Thanks for good app. Runstastic is now working, manually though. You can upload TCX file via browser. It contains heart rate as well (at least for me).
Also, runtastic has a feature "import from Garmin device", now. It is in -> upload activity.

the app can send the tcx directly without going through a manual upload. Ravi was exporting to gpx, that's why heart rate was missing.

Carlo,

I like your Garmin apps, as they enable my mobile workflow! Thank you for your work!

Sorry, that I haven't noticed the blog entry here before commenting in play store. Accidential downrating happened by mistake - guess it was my thick fingers... Corrected it a few seconds ago. The apps are worth every penny.

Export of the file to tcx and manually upload via browser did the trick for me.

Thanks Michael. Generally speaking (leaving my app aside) when you find a problem I would suggest that you use the "contact developer" feature on google play for apps without a website / blog, or the latter when available.

Developers have only 350 chars to reply on google play, and it's not the right place to have a conversation about problems.

That said, I'll investigate the changes on runtastic in the next few days, so far I've always managed to fix the app when needed...

I'm testing a new version right now, most likely I'll publish a fix in a few hours

I've just pushed Sportablet 8.1 and the Uploader for Garmin 7.1 to google play with a fix for runtastic upload. They slightly changed their login code and I had to adapt my apps accordingly.

Im having issues with samsung s5 phone uploading my spins from garmin 500. For some reason every now and then it seems to wipe clear my data. I am using a standard otg connector . Just wondering is this right or is it something else im doing wrong. Must times it will upload

the F10 uses FIT files, which won't be accepted by runtastic at this time. Sorry. Ask them to support FIT files, it's long overdue : )
